How to Manage Swallowing Issues in Children with Down Syndrome
Overview
This informative GLOBAL Webinar discussed an overview of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), including the different types of dysphagia seen in children with Down syndrome; the impacts dysphagia can have on health and quality of life; how a medical team can support families and children with dysphagia; tips for advocating for care and feeding plans; and how research is exploring dysphagia in Down syndrome.
The webinar attracted over 200 registrants from 33 states and 16 countries (Albania, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Finland, Ireland, Japan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda and United Kingdom).

Arwen Jackson and Jenny Maybee are speech-language pathologists and Emily DeBoer is a pulmonologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Arwen, Jenny, and Emily all support children with Down syndrome, children with feeding and swallowing difficulties, and children with complex pulmonary and airway disorders through several clinical programs at the hospital, including the Sie Center for Down syndrome, the Aerodigestive and Dysphagia Management Clinics, and the Swallowing Disorders Clinic. Arwen, Jenny and Emily lead several research and quality improvement projects designed to improve our field’s understanding of dysphagia and pulmonary disease in Down syndrome. They have authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and have presented at multiple national and international conferences on their work. Arwen, Jenny and Emily authored a book chapter in the recently published book Pediatric Aerodigestive Medicine titled “The Multidisciplinary Care of Children with Down Syndrome”.
